Dr. Mahendra Varia, 78, died Sunday, Feb. 16 at his home in Martin.

He was born in Jamnagar, India to the late Rangildas and Diwaliben Varia.

He and his wife, Chandra, came to Martin in 1979 and embraced it as their home.

He was a retired veterinarian and member of the Martin City Council since 1998. He and his wife were dedicated philanthropists, establishing the Varia Family Foundation in 2000, and are inextricably linked with their community.

In addition to his wife, survivors include one daughter, Renu and (Jagdish) Mehta; one sister, Mina and (Navin) Doshi; one grandson, Satya Mehta; one granddaughter Sheel and (Rick) Slone; one nephew Anand and (Kejal) Doshi. Other nephews and nieces include: Jigar (Anju) Varia, Manisha (Ketan) Mazani, Dilip (Chandrika) Shah, Ashwin (Panna) Shah, Punit (Nutan) Shah and Asha (Tushar) Gosalia.

His brother Kishor Varia also preceded him in death.

Visitation was held at Hall Funeral Home in Martin on Feb. 19. Funeral services were held Feb. 20 at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to St. Joseph Martin (Our Lady of the Lay) for a focus on cardiac care.

James Wallace "J.W." Young Jr., 75, of Hardy, died Feb. 13. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps having served for 22 years and retiring as a First Sergeant. Alberta Shelton Shannon, 82, of Drift, wife of Teddy Shannon, died March 30 at her residence.

She was born Dec. 13, 1931 in Drift, the daughter of the late Eddie and Lillie Lafferty Shelton. She was a member of the Drift Pentecostal Church and a retired nurse's aid.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters: Kathy JoAnn (Greg) Stumbo, Peggy (Johnny) Pack; four brothers: Ted Shelton, Clark Shelton, both of McDowell, Bobby Shelton of Indiana, Pat Shelton of Versailles; six sisters: Georgia Kidd of Drift, Bernadine Schrader of Prestonsburg, Emogene Jones of McDowell, Diane Price of Drift, Mary Combs of McDowell, Teresa Harris of Drift; five grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Her parents and her brothers, Russell and Cecil Shelton, preceded her in death.

Funeral services were held March 26 at Drift Pentecostal Church with Eugene Haney officiating. Burial followed in the Drift Cemetery under direction of Hall Funeral Home.

BELFRY - A community is rallying behind the family of a Belfry High School sophomore who lost her battle with cancer this week.

Casey "Lou" Michelle Maynard, 15, of South Williamson, died April 5.

She was a sophomore at Belfry High School who was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma 1.5 years ago. Since then, she has inspired Belfry and the Pond Creek community with her strength, faith and hope.

The Tri-State Wrestling Alliance will host a "Wrestling for Casey" fundraiser on April 19 at 7:30 p.m. at the Williamson Field House in Williamson, W.Va. Ringside advanced ticket holders will enjoy a meet-and-greet from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The event will feature television stars Chase Stevens, The Pope Da Angelo from TNA, Cerberus Vladimir Koloff, Rock-n-Roller Tommy Gibson, Amish Hustler, Lisa Fund, Michelle Myers, Tomahawk and others.

Tickets are $10 for general admission dn $15 for ringside privileges. Proceeds will benefit Maynard's family.

Survivors include her parents Mike and Angie Marcum Maynard; her sister Ashley (Donald Tilley) Maynard of McCarr; her brother Travis Maynard of South Williamson; her grandparents Jackie Marcum of Chattaroy, W.Va., Glen and Jenny Reed of Pinsonfork and Diane Maynard of Belfry; and other family members and friends.

WHITESBURG - Patricia Gish, who worked with her husband Tom Gish to publish The Mountain Eagle in Whitesburg for more than 50 years, died April 13 at her home.

She was 87 years old.

She worked at a Lexington newspaper before she and her husband bought the eastern Kentucky newspaper in 1956. They overcame advertising boycotts, business competition, declining population, personal attacks and a firebombing in 1974 that destroyed the newspaper office.

Because of their service, the Institute for Rural Journalism and Community Issues honors journalists with the "Gish Award," which recognizes "courage, integrity and tenacity in rural journalism."

Patricia Gish been listed as the newspaper's publisher since her husband died in 2008. Their son, Ben Gish, is currently the editor and acting publisher. 

The daughter of the late Elmer Alvis and Georgia Adams Burnett, Patricia is survived by her sons:  Ben Gish and Ray Gish; three daughters: Ann Gish, Sarah Gish (Freddy) Oakes and Kitty (Doug Raleigh) Gish of Mayking; her brother Thomas Burnett; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services were held April 17 at Graham Memorial Presbyterian Church with Jerry Utt officiating. A private burial service was held under direction of Letcher Funeral Home.


Memorial service set for council member

MARTIN - A memorial service will be held next week to celebrate the life of Dr. Mahendra Varia, a retired veterinarian and Martin City Council member who died this year.

The hill in the city of Martin will be named in Dr. Varia's honor. The dedication of the Varia Hill will be held at 11:30 a.m. on April 25. Lunch will be provided.

At 2:30 p.m. on April 25, a dedication ceremony for the Varia Gazebo will be held at the Big Sandy Community & Technical College campus in Prestonsburg. Refreshments will be served.

James Edward Hager, 73, of Fayetteville, North Carolina, died June 14.

He was born Aug. 24, 1940, in Logan, W.Va. to the late Everette Day and Hallie Justice Hager.

A native of David in Floyd County, he was a 1959 graduate of Prestonsburg High School, attended Eastern Kentucky State College in Richmond and Mayo Vocational School where he studied drafting. He later retired from Purolator after 30 years of service.

The family received friends on June 20 at Pinecrest Funeral and Cremation Services in Hope Mills, North Carolina. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 5, at Middle Creek Baptist Church in Blue River.

He was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Jasmine H. Goodman; brothers, Lowell Hager, Ronnie Hager; sisters, Joyce A. Hager, Lova L. Hager, Clara J. Baldridge.

He is survived by his daughter, Shyla A.  Hager (Nelson Jr.) Tyler of Fayetteville; two grandchildren: Jamie E. Goodman II, Lyric J. Tyler; two great-granddaughters: Anna B. Adkins, Alexis R. Goodman; sisters: Rose Wells of Ohio, Catherine Prater of Florida, Shirlee Branham of Prestonburg; his brother Charles Hager of David, many nieces, nephews.

He was a lover of life and basketball. Even though he migrated to North Carolina, he loved his Kentucky Wildcats. The family knows he is somewhere shooting hoops with his brothers.

The Tug Valley Chamber of Commerce lost one of its dedicated board members recently.

George Scott Poole, 30, of Williamson, W.Va., died June 22.

Survivors include his parents, George and Patricia Surgeon Poole of Williamson; sister Christina (Lucas) Smith of Texas and other family members and friends.

A licensed insurance agent at City Insurance Agency in Williamson, Poole was involved with the Tug Valley Chamber of Commerce, the Williamson Parks and Recreation Board, the Mountain Club and the Hatfield McCoy Reunion. His father helped establish the Hatfield-McCoy Trail System.

Poole's funeral was held June 26 at the First United Methodist Church of Williamson with Rev. Tom Schuler and Michael Black officiating. He was buried in the Lexington Cemetery in Lexington under direction of Weaver Mortuary.

The Scott Poole Memorial Fund was recently established at http://youcaring.com to raise funds to place a memorial for Poole at the head of the Buffalo Mountain Trail Head, part of the Hatfield & McCoy Trail.

Williamson High School Class of 2002 is hosting the fundraiser, which has already raised more than $10,000.

William "Bill" Sturgill

1924-2014

William Bartram "Bill" Sturgill, 89, a well-known business leader from eastern Kentucky, died July 19.

Born on July 31, 1924, in Floyd County, he was the son of the late Dorothy and Troy Sturgill.

The Lexington-Herald Leader reports that he played basketball under Adolph Rupp "was a wealthy and powerful figure at the center of the state's three signature industries - coal, tobacco and horses."

Sturgill served in numerous roles, the newspaper reports, including secretary of a combined Agriculture and Energy Cabinet during Gov. John Y. Brown's administration, chairman of the Kentucky State Racing Commission, chairman of the University of Kentucky Board of Trustees,  co-owner of Kentucky Oak Mining, which introduced strip mining and reclamation in eastern Kentucky, owner of Golden Oak Mining, chairman of the board for Central Rock Mineral Company, the Fourth Street and Gentry Tobacco Warehouses, Energy Insurance Agency and Hartland Development Partnership. He also served on boards for CSX Railroad and East Kentucky Economic Development Corporation, Cardinal Hill Hospital, the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce, Spindletop Research, Appalachian Regional Hospital and McDowell Cancer Research Foundation.

In the 1950s, he also organized and became the president of the Hazard Independent College Foundation and served as a trustee for Pikeville College, now known as the University of Pikeville.

He is the namesake of the Sturgill Development Building at UK and the William B. Sturgill Award, given annually to faculty members for outstanding contributions to graduate education at the university.

In addition to his wife Eloise, he was preceded in death by a son, Paul, and sister, Gwendolyn Dingus.

He is survived by a daughter Mary (Cooper) Hartley; a son, Richard (Tracie) Sturgill; and daughter-in-law Tobey Sturgill. Also surviving are his grandchildren Emmy Hartley, Matthew (Julia) Hartley, Stuart Hartley, Kendall Sturgill, Ellie (Matt) Wooden, Jenny (Patrick) McClure, William (Hillary) Sturgill, Kenton Sturgill as well as five great-grandchildren; a brother, Barkley (Nancy) Sturgill and sister, Winfred Skaggs.

A memorial service was held on July 23, 1:00 p.m. at Second Presbyterian Church, Lexington. Kerr Brothers Funeral Home hosted a private burial.
