Bob Cox  1927-2012
Pike County is mourning the loss of a dedicated veteran this month.

William Albert "Bob" Cox, 85, of Raccoon, died Dec. 6. He served in the U.S. Airforce and Army Air Corps during World War II, Korea and two terms in Vietnam.

His service was highlighted during the Pikeville Medical Center Tribute to Veterans on Nov. 9.

The son of the late Willie and Cora Ratliff Cox, he earned more than 16 medals and honors for his service. He was the first member of the Johns Creek Disabled American Veterans Chapter 166 and was named the Kentucky Disabled American Veteran of the Year for 2010-2011. A flight engineer, he assisted pilots during combat missions.

"I flew over 1,000 combat missions and I prayed through most of them. I always prayed," he told the Medical Leader in a 2010 interview.

He retired in 1972 at the Kessler Air Force Base in Mississippi after serving 24 years in the Army Air Corps and the Air Force. He returned to coal mining in Pike County for about six years before he finally retired.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughters, Marsha L. Cox and Alicia A. Cox, and his brother, Leon Cox.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn S. Cox of Grassy Creek; five children: John W. Cox of Ratliff Creek, William A. Cox Jr. of Inez, Colin C. Cox of Lawrenceburg, Roy D. Adkins of Pikeville and Angela K. Cox Reynolds of Raccoon; 15 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Dec. 9 at Community Funeral Home with Brad Williamson and ministers from the Grassy Freewill Baptist Church officiating.

He was buried at the Annie E. Young Cemetery with members of the Johns Creek Disabled American Veterans Chapter conducting DAV rites.

Jesse Stewart, 100, of Grundy, Va., widower of Amy Leah Mullins Stewart, died Dec. 14. He joined the Army Air Corps in June 1941, serving in England and Africa in the 319th Bomb Group.

He received numerous medals and honors, including the Oak Leaf Cluster, and was awarded a star by Gen. Doolittle following the Tokya raid. A former Quartermaster of Childs Gentry Post 7360 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, he also served as Officer in the Grundy Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol and was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.

LaVonne Lafferty, 75, of Prestonsburg, died Dec. 26. She was born March 30, 1937 in Floyd County to the late Edgille and Della Marshall Baldridge.

She was a pastor of the Full Gospel Community Church in Allen and served as director of Christian education at Mountain Christian Academy. She owned LaVonne's Rest in Martin.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Freddie Lafferty; son William J. Conley; brother Conrad Baldridge and sister Thomasine Baldridge Patrick.

Survivors include two sons: Edgille (Diane) Conley and Christopher R. (Shea) Lafferty; her daughter Sabrina C. (Chris) Holbrook; several grandchildren: Jason (Amber), Joshua (Jennifer) Braxton and Colton; and several great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Dec. 30 at Nelson Frazier Funeral Home. Burial followed in the Davidson Memorial Gardens, Ivel.

Rafael Fortuna Santiago, 66, of Pikeville, died January 6.

Born Oct. 23, 1946, in the Philippines, he was the son of Gabriel and Ana Fortuna Santiago.

Survivors include his wife, Rubinia Silva Santiago; three daughters: Dr. Myla Santiago of Pikeville, Ana Pamela Laran of London, England, and Athena Fel Layag of the Philippines; seven brothers: Salvador Santiago, Peter Santiago, Nilo Santiago, Rodolfo Santiago, Paul Santiago, Epifanio Santiago and Nicolas Santiago; and three grandchildren.

Pikeville Medical Center is mourning the loss of a dedicated employee this week.

Timothy Ervin Tackett, the hospital's assistant director of security, died January 10.

He had been employed at PMC since July 12, 1989.

He was born July 5, 1967, in Maryland, the son of Priscilla C. Wyatt Tackett and the late Keniss Ervin Tackett.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife Violet Stevens Tackett; his son, Dalton J. Tackett of Harold; his sister, Patricia (Ronald) Hunter Kidd of Harold and his nephew, Bradyn Hunter.

Funeral services were held on Monday, January 14, at the Toler Creek Freewill Baptist Church in Harold with Larry Kendrick and others officiating.

Burial followed in the Howell Family Cemetery on Island Creek under the direction of Nelson Frazier Funeral Home.

Pike County is mourning the loss of a doctor who dedicated more than 30 years of service to health care in eastern Kentucky.

Dr. Oscar William "Pepaw" Thompson Jr., 83, of Pikeville, died Jan. 18.

Born Nov. 1, 1929, the son of the late Dr. Oscar William Thompson Sr. and Hattie Weddington Thompson, he married Pluma Jean May Thompson in 1949 and they spent 62 cherished years together.

A graduate of Eastern Kentucky University and the University of Louisville Medical School, Dr. Thompson completed his internship at the University of Alabama. He was a captain in the U.S. Airforce in the 1950s and completed his residency in internal medicine at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

Dr. Thompson was one of the founders of the first Intensive Care Unit at Pikeville Medical Center, then known as Pikeville Methodist Hospital. An advocate for education, he served as a member of the American Medical Association, American Southern Medical Association, Pike County Medical Association, Citizens Bank Board of Directors and U.S. Bank Regional Board of Directors. He also served as a deacon of the First Christian Church in Pikeville.

He loved his patients and practicing medicine and he was a devoted gardener, golfer, bird watcher, life-long learner and an avid University of Louisville sports fan.

Survivors include two sons: Oscar W. (Martha) Thompson III of Pikeville, James "Jimbo" Thompson; his daughter Janie T. Hall of Pikeville; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Jan. 21 at J.W. Call & Son Funeral Home. Entombment followed in the Thompson Family Cemetery at Tollage Creek in Pikeville.

Dorothy (Dottie) Belle Walters Carter, 78, of Pikeville, widow of James E. Carter, died Jan. 28.

Born Oct. 2, 1934 in Paintsville, the daughter of the late Elmon Poe Walters and Elizabeth Stapleton Walters, she graduated from Pikeville College Academy, Nazareth School of Nursing, and Saint Josephs Infirmary in Louisville. She also took undergraduate classes at Eastern Kentucky University.

Dorothy provided years of service to Pikeville Medical Center and numerous organizations that benefited the community.

She worked for the Miners Memorial Hospital Association from 1956-1965, the Appalachian Regional Hospital Association from 1965-1966 and in 1996, she retired from Pikeville United Methodist Hospital, where she served as vice president of planning and development.

Dorothy served as a member of the Pike County Board of Health, Mayo State Vocational/Technical School of Practical Nursing, Elizabeth Akers Elliott Associate Degree Program, Kentucky Society for Healthcare Planning and Marketing, Alliance for Healthcare Strategy and Marketing, American Society for Healthcare Marketing and Public Relations, the Pikeville Kiwanis Club and the Pikeville United Methodist Church.

Survivors include two children: Helen E. "Libby" Carter and James "Jimmy" (Kim) Carter; two siblings: Robert L. Walters of McDowell and Emily Poe Skeens of Pikeville; two grandchildren: Brittany L. (Nathan) Ratliff and James T. T. Carter; great-grandchild Zoey K. Ratliff and other family members and friends.

The family would like to provide a special thank you to Dr. Ayo Medaiyese and Dr. Bill Harris and the Intensive Care Unit nurses and staff at Pikeville Medical Center.

Troy Owens, 70, of Blue River, died Feb. 26.

A retired maintenance for Island Creek Coal Company, he was born Feb.4, 1943, a son of the late Butler and Ina Webb Owens.

Survivors include his wife Ruby "Eileen" Bradford Owens; three children: Tommy Owens, Randy Owens, both of Blue River, and Tammy Robinson of Prestonsburg; his sister, Brenda Shepherd of David; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

His siblings Bill H. Owens, Odis Owens, James R. Owens, Ralph Owens, Ada M. Owens, Mable Hackworth and Elsie Rahrig preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held Feb. 28 at Nelson Frazier Funeral Home. Burial followed in the Webb Family Cemetery in Buckeye.
