William Albert "Bob" Cox, 85, of Raccoon, died Dec. 6. He served in the U.S. Airforce and Army Air Corps during World War II, Korea and two terms in Vietnam.
His service was highlighted during the Pikeville Medical Center Tribute to Veterans on Nov. 9.
The son of the late Willie and Cora Ratliff Cox, he earned more than 16 medals and honors for his service. He was the first member of the Johns Creek Disabled American Veterans Chapter 166 and was named the Kentucky Disabled American Veteran of the Year for 2010-2011. A flight engineer, he assisted pilots during combat missions.
"I flew over 1,000 combat missions and I prayed through most of them. I always prayed," he told the Medical Leader in a 2010 interview.
He retired in 1972 at the Kessler Air Force Base in Mississippi after serving 24 years in the Army Air Corps and the Air Force. He returned to coal mining in Pike County for about six years before he finally retired.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughters, Marsha L. Cox and Alicia A. Cox, and his brother, Leon Cox.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn S. Cox of Grassy Creek; five children: John W. Cox of Ratliff Creek, William A. Cox Jr. of Inez, Colin C. Cox of Lawrenceburg, Roy D. Adkins of Pikeville and Angela K. Cox Reynolds of Raccoon; 15 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Dec. 9 at Community Funeral Home with Brad Williamson and ministers from the Grassy Freewill Baptist Church officiating.
He was buried at the Annie E. Young Cemetery with members of the Johns Creek Disabled American Veterans Chapter conducting DAV rites.
