Obituaries: Floyd County, eastern KY mourn Grigsby's passing

MARTIN - Eastern Kentucky is mourning the death of  former Floyd County superintendent, coach, television and radio broadcaster Elhanan Pete Grigsby Jr.

Grigsby, 81, passed away this past Monday.

He served the Kentucky public schools system for over 54 years, primarily in his native Floyd County, as teacher, basketball and baseball coach, principal, assistant superintendent and superintendent.

During his 13-year stint at McDowell, he led the Dare Devils to the 15th Region finals five times, winning titles in 1966, 1971 and 1973.

Following his coaching career, he became a well-known television and radio broadcaster for high school basketball games with WPRG and WLXR.

Grigsby scored over 2,000 points as a point guard for the Martin Purple Flash and was a first-team, All-State player in 1952. He was a member of legendary coach Adolph Rupp's 1953-54 undefeated Kentucky team.

Grigsby also played baseball at UK.

He was born Aug. 25, 1934, at Bypro, son of the late Elhanan Pete and Marena Hayes Grigsby.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis.

Survivors include his children: Melinda Gay (Lee) Majakey and Geri Eileen Grigsby, all of Lexington, and Elhanan Pete (Michelle) Grigsby III of Blue Springs, Mo.

Memorial services were held Thursday, Jan. 21 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Martin. Entombment followed in Grigsby Family Cemetery, Minnie.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Hall Funeral Home.
