Eastern Kentucky is mourning the death of Walter "Smokey" Blankenship, who passed away on Nov. 26 at Pikeville Medical Center. He was 92.
Blankenship, a U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II, was a former coal operator, former city commissioner, city manager and parks director. He was a former Pikeville Medical Center (PMC) board member and emeritus member of PMC.
He was born June 13, 1923, the son of the late Alson and Laura McGuire Blankenship of Pikeville.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret "Peggy" Blankenship and one sister, Lois E. Ray.
He is survived by his wife, Grace Burchett Blankenship; two sons, Hedland (Debbie) Blankenship of Ormond Beach, Fla., and Reynolds (Cindy) Hedland III of Hallandale, Fla.; one brother, Vernon "Tracy" Blankenship; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Nov. 28, at J.W. Call Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in Johnson Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorial contributions be made to the University of Pikeville, 214 Sycamore St., Pikeville, KY 41501.
